Songs In The Key Of Love

A few days ago our lovely Tmptrz posted up a group of love songs for Valentine’s Day. It was an XLNT list and a few of hers are on the following list, which is my slightly older view on the subject. They are in chronological order because it would be impossible to pick any one over the others. This is just a very small sampling of some of the great love songs. Let the Schmaltz begin . . .

I guess you’d say David Ruffin sang it to perfection.
1964 “My Girl’ The Temptations

Righteous does not even begin to describe how fine this song is.
1965 “Unchained Melody” The Righteous Brothers

Harmonies were this group’s thing.
1966 “Cherish” The Association

This woman’s voice is the most sultry, smoky, sensuous voice EVER.
1967 "The Look of Love" Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien a.k.a. Dusty Springfield

He was called Mr. Excitement and this song embodies that.
1967 "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" Jack Leroy “Jackie” Wilson Jr.

Trust in me when I say that when this song was played in the movie “The Deer Hunter” almost everyone in the theater did the chorus. We saw it 3 times just so we could do that.
1967 “Can't Take My Eyes off You” Francesco Stephen Castelluccio a.k.a. Frankie Valli

I have every record (vinyl 33 1/3 LPs) this guy and the Brass made.
1968 “This Guy's in Love with You” Herb Alpert

He is possibly the most amazing all around musical talent ever.
1969 "My Cherie Amour" Stevland Hardaway Morris a.k.a. Stevie Wonder

One of his many great soulful songs.
1971 “Let's Stay Together” Al Green

Best known for “Secret Agent Man” he’s also given us plenty other numbers. Both times I’ve been to his concerts hundreds of people stood up and swayed to the music with their girl.
1977 "Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin' )" John Henry Ramistella a.k.a. Johnny Rivers

Dusty is a personal favourite but Unchained Melody is brilliant.
Dusty had a beautiful voice. I recently ran across a documentary on her on U-tube called Just Dusty. It was pretty interesting.

    Very nicely curated list!

The only one I might argue with is Herb Alpert. I love the Tijuana Brass but Herb wasn't a very good singer.

Oh heck, I'll let him stay just for his looks.
Thanks SA. No Herb doesn't have the greatest voice but . . . he sounds genuinely like a regular guy which gives the song more cred IMO. I'll tell him you let him stay on my list

Great list there McScally! My favourite of all time and ultra-schmaltzy too is 'Can't get by without you' by The Real Thing.
I'll have to check the you tube on that song McKilty.

Incredible songs. I started singing right away. I have a special soft spot for Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. My dad taught me to love them. I have their CD's
Herb and the TJB were one of the few artists me and my parents both liked.

Great 👍 list. It’s almost impossible to come up with a definitive list. “Always On My Mind” by Willie Nelson is on my top list.
I generally don't listen to country but that is a good one

A couple of my favorites and I have to tune into a Phoenix station to hear them

When listing great love songs how could you leave out Tommy Tutone's "Jenny", one of the greatest love songs of our generation? 867-5309, 867-5309

Thank you so much for adding to my top ten list of all time favorite romantic songs. I just love these especially My Girl, my hubby can sing that song so well and I enjoy it when he does.

All of these songs bring back such great memories. And I hope you enjoy a wonderfully Happy Valentines Day my friend..

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..
